I recently discovered Flightfox, the crowdsourcing platform that allows you to launch a contest and allows experts to find you the cheapest flight deals. The service costs as little as $29 which is peanuts compared to how much you could save…. so how much can you save?
I thought I would do a little test to see how Flightfox fared against a flight search engine, Skyscanner, and a travel agency, Flight Centre.
My brief was simple. I wanted to fly from Columbia back to the UK. I had fairly flexible dates and was easy as to the stopover location on the way back.
Flight Centre Results
Working with a lovely Flight Centre consultant (Clapham, UK Branch) I was offered the following: £930 GBP return flights.
Running the same criteria through Skyscanner and fiddling with dates, the cheapest option came up at £849 GBP. Better but what can Flightfox do?
Again using the same criteria, I launched a contest on Flightfox to see what the ‘crowd’ could do.
I had one expert come back with the following deal that he’d found on Expedia for £786 GBP.
Please note that there is a finders fee that you pay to an expert once the contest is over. This costs as little as $34. The cost of my contest was $39 USD which is approximately £26 GBP.
The Flightfox finders fee added to the cost of the flight puts it at £812 GBP. That’s £37 cheaper than Skyscanner (where I had to do the searching myself) and £118 cheaper than the quote from Flight Centre.
Gap Year Escape declares Flightfox a success… in this instance.
Use Flightfox when you are looking for flights where you are flexible with flight times and layovers. We’d also recommend using Flightfox for long haul flights which are costly and/or quite tricky and require a lot of leg work in terms of searching. For short trips we’d recommend sticking to budget airlines and using a search aggregator due to the cost of having to run a contest on Flightfox.
We’ve managed to secure you a 25% discount on using this service. Just click this and the discount will automatically be applied. Take a look at their site and browse other contests. You’ll get a feel for how it all works. Happy hunting!
